It’s a given that you’ll need to vet roofing contractors before hiring them. That way, you can rest easy knowing that they’re qualified for the job. The problem is the vetting process can take a while, and not a lot of homeowners have time to spare for doing research. Fortunately, there are ways to speed up the vetting process without compromising the results.
A common vetting trick is to check their certifications. A rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is one of the most widely recognized certifications in the industry. Here’s what an A-plus rating means for customers:
What Does the BBB Do?
The BBB is an independent organization that assigns ratings to businesses based on how it thinks a certain company will interact with a customer. These ratings range from A-plus (the highest rating) to F (the lowest rating).
How Does the BBB Assign Ratings?
There are several factors the BBB takes into account when calculating a company’s rating, but in general, significant weighting is given to the level of customer service a company provides. Overall, there are 13 factors, which include:
- Number of complaints about the contractor – The number of complaints that remain unresolved as well as the total volume of complaints are taken into account when calculating ratings.
- Experience in the industry – Newer contractors don’t have as much experience as more established contractors, and, therefore, most probably received fewer complaints. That’s why experience is taken into account as well.
What an A-Plus Rating With the BBB Means
To get an A-plus rating, a contractor would need to get a score of 97 out of 100, which is no mean feat given that you need to receive a near-perfect score in nearly all categories. As such, if you’re having an A-plus rated contractor conduct roof maintenance or installations, you can expect a high level of customer service.
