There is a common misunderstanding that home improvement projects should only be done during the spring, summer or fall. However, there are projects that you can also perform during winter, including the following:
1. Plumbing and Pipes
The exterior pipes and spigots should be covered completely with foam insulation. If you won’t be using them, shut off the water valves. There must be no water leakage or flooding due to burst pipes.
2. Gutters and Roof
If you’re afraid of doing roofing and gutter maintenance during winter, worry no more. By tending to your gutters and roofing, you’ll be able to avoid ice dam formation. You can also add a heated cable system under the first few rows of your shingles to melt ice or snow. Or, place gutter guards to decrease the possibilities of clogging and ice dams.
3. Seal Leaks and Window Replacement
During winter, it’s important to keep your home warm. If there are leaks in your home, the cold air can enter, and the warm air can seep outside. Make sure to cover the seams around windows and doors with caulk, waterproof sealant or weatherstripping. You can also consider windows replacement if your old window can no longer suffice your needs.
4. Insulation
For a properly insulated home, you can protect your entire attic with at least 16 inches of R-49 insulation. You can also add this insulation to little-used crawlspaces and basement ceilings.
5. Programmable Thermostat
A programmable thermostat can give you benefits like cutting energy savings cost and keeping your home warm. Upon installation, you can customize the settings according to your preference and needs.
