Vinyl Siding: Good for Your Home and the Environment

Many homeowners today have become more conscious about the materials they choose as they aim to build more eco-friendly homes. Manufacturers are quick to heed this growing demand by offering more sustainable products for various construction needs. From roofing to flooring, several options are now available to help you build a home that doesn’t hurt the environment.

Despite being dismissed as mere plastic, vinyl siding actually has a significantly lower environmental impact than other exterior products. In a recent Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) report, vinyl siding showed a better Environmental Impact Score (EIS) than fiber cement, cedar board and brick and mortar.

Roof Masters, a trusted roofing company that also has expertise in siding installation, considers this a win for homeowners, the vinyl siding industry and the environment. Taking a closer look at the study, anyone can easily appreciate the green benefits of this type of cladding.

Vinyl Siding vs. Fiber Cement

The BEES report analyzed vinyl siding and other exterior products based on eleven impact categories, which help determine the effects of a certain product on climate change and the environment. Compared to fiber cement, vinyl siding demonstrated significantly lower impacts in every environmental impact category. The most impressive is its non-carcinogenic impact.

Vinyl Siding vs. Cedar Board

Compared to cedar board, vinyl siding recorded lower impacts in the smog, climate change, ozone depletion, eutrophication, acidification and non-carcinogenic impact categories. One of the most remarkable findings of the study is the ozone depletion and smog impacts of cedar board. Its ozone depletion impact is more than double the impact of vinyl siding, and its smog impact is 42% higher than that of vinyl siding.

Vinyl Siding vs. Brick and Mortar

Vinyl siding demonstrated lower impacts in almost all of the categories when compared to brick and mortar. Most notably, its smog impact is only 11% of that for brick and mortar.
