Underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier that is installed directly on the roof deck and underneath the shingles. Its main purpose is to provide an additional layer of protection from weather elements, such as rain, snow and wind. Asphalt-saturated, non-bitumen synthetic and rubberized asphalt are the three basic types of roof underlayment.
